[instagram]http://instagram.com/clarkeboehling[/instagram]I was derailed from academia by the allure of the vine and its fruits, and relocated from my native Virginia to Brooklyn in 2005 to pursue a career in wine. I spent four years at Skurnik Wines as their French portfolio manager, and accepted a position with the legendary importer Neal Rosenthal in 2009—first, building a base of clients in NYC and PA for Neal’s rugged, low-tech, deeply authentic wines, and now, as “producer liaison,” visiting Rosenthal’s 115 growers twice per year to check in.

A lifelong enthusiast of writing, I also generate all of the company’s written content and regularly issued special offerings. I am a hopeless obsessive about Burgundy—truly the final frontier for anyone interested in wine’s uncanny ability to express a sense of place with incredible and dependable specificity.

About Rosenthal: The Mad Rose Group is a family-run organization that is composed of a close-knit group of people who understand that wine is an agricultural product. The portfolio represents wines from Italy, France, Spain and Catalonia that all reflect a specific sense of place.

Things I love Most About Wine:

  • It’s ultimately uncontrollable.
  • Its finite nature teaches lessons about sustainability on our planet.
  • It’s a lens on both the earth and the humans who steward it.
  • Every bottle offers an unduplicatable experience.
  • It’s the most delicious thing in the world.

Favorite Films (currently, in no particular order):

  • Eyes Wide Shut (Stanley Kubrick, 1999)
  • Major League (David S. Ward, 1989)
  • The Virgin Spring (Ingmar Bergman, 1960)
  • Mulholland Drive (David Lynch, 2001)
  • King of New York (Abel Ferrara, 1990)

Judas Priest Songs (currently, in no particular order):

  • “Starbreaker” (from Sin After Sin, 1977)
  • “Running Wild” (from Killing Machine, 1978)
  • “Desert Plains” (from Point of Entry, 1981)
  • “Exciter” (from Stained Class, 1978)
  • “The Sentinel” (from Defenders of the Faith, 1984)

Potentially Controversial Personal Beliefs:

  • The world would be stabler and happier if we had all stuck with MySpace.
  • The font Comic Sans should be outlawed for its anti-human hideousness.
  • Sandwiches are highly overrated.
  • Vinyl has always, and will always, sound superior to any other format in terms of presence, warmth, and engagingness, BUT most vinyl pressed in the past ten years sounds like garbage.
  • We attack in others what we most dislike about ourselves.

Favorite Foods:

  • Mushroom risotto
  • Samosas
  • Perfectly scrambled eggs (cooked in butter, of course)
  • Comté
  • Ohn No Khao Swè (look it up)
